Since the early 1980s the Isle of Dogs has experienced an urban regeneration unrivalled in Europe, and the buildings erected there comprise one of the largest concentrations of late-twentieth-century architecture to be seen anywhere in the world. The story of this transformation is told here, from the inception of the London Docklands Development Corporation and the designation of much of the former docks, an Enterprise Zone, to the most recently completed developments. As well as familiar landmarks, like Canary Wharf Tower and Cascades apartment block, many smaller and lesser-known buildings are described in detailed gazetteers.Much of the text was originally written for the Survey of London's two-volume study Poplar, Blackwall and the Isle of Dogs, published in 1994. It has now been revised and updated, and is prefaced by a new chapter reviewing the history of large-scale developments on the Isle of Dogs since the late seventeenth century.
