Somewhere in the darkness of space, a man is up to no good. A transport ship - the Blue Horizon - is midway between Earth and Janner's Planet - one of the far outposts of the Earth Commonwealth of Planets. On the ship is a girl heading home - Kazzy Coomber has completed her education on Earth, and is heading back to attend military academy. Her father is a Space Fleet Captain, commanding a Battle cruiser.Kazzy wakes up on the ship - unsure what has woken her. She scored high on the Psi quotient test, so perhaps her ability to foresee events is what alerted her.On leaving her cabin, she sees and challenged a man acting suspiciously towards the ship's drive unit. The man has a gun and fires at her. He misses, so she gets to a life-pod and hits an alarm button. She downloads the data from the ship as the ship is engulfed in a massive explosion. There are no other survivors, even the saboteur died when trying to eject in another pod.Alone in space, Kazzy broadcasts a mayday message and the ship takes her towards Verda - a forest world colonised a few hundred years ago, but independent and not part of the Commonwealth. On Verda, a young hunter called Fynn sees a shooting star that is, in fact, Kazzy's ship crash-landing in the forest.Alone in a very alien and wild world, Kazzy plots the only course she can - to what is listed as a Commonwealth scientific outpost that has not called in for over a hundred years.Meanwhile, those responsible for the act of sabotage seek to minimise the damage by removing the survivors and any data they might possess that would incriminate the Federation of Free Planets.Likewise, the Commonwealth Fleet pick up the message and steps are taken to send help, but will they be in time?Fynn and his only true friend - a Timber Wolf called Silva, find the crash site and pick up her trail. They seek to locate and help the girl.It is now a race against time
