After a young woman finds a coverless used book about crows and ravens, she begins to see flocks of crows everywhere. Paintings of crows appear in her apartment and office space, and a strange young man who calls himself Crow insists that she is the Scribe, her kooky sister Piper is the Voice, and her priest brother Adriel, the Wielder, and that the three are needed to stop evil and close a portal. Crow can appear through walls and is impossible to ignore, so Rilla agrees to a quest that will overcome a growing threat she calls the Jabberwock to save her family from its deadly attack.
