Compiled by a hospice social worker, this book is designed to be used by children ages 5-11, in their grief journey. An adult mentor is needed to help with some of the exercises. There is some writing involved, but mostly the activities can be drawn. Children enjoy and like art work, and because of this, there is very little reading but a lot of drawing and coloring. This book will, in fact, be written by the child. After it is completed, the child can say that he / she wrote a 100 page book (actually 111 pages). The questions in the book take the child from the 'shock' stage of grief, up to a more highly functioning stage. Most of the questions involve memories. Some challenge the ‘victimhood’ mentality. They invite the child to go forward, in spite of the loss, and to be a creative partner, with time, in making life into what he or she wants it to be. Some of the activities require the involvement of other people. Healing is OK alone, but having a partner on the journey is often desirable. These activities encourage this. Some of the activities honor the significant role of the deceased in the life of the child. One of the unique parts of this book is a suggestion that the child create (with the help of a mentor) a memorial. The completion of the book is a memorial, of sorts, but even moreso is the planned memorial that the child will have the chance to plan and complete.
