In March 1942 an army of 10,000 soldiers and an equal number of civilians began building the 1,500-mile-long Alaska Highway to thwart any attempt by the Japanese to overrun North America. Their task was to push a highway through dense bush and over mountains and raging rivers, to link Dawson City, BC, to Fairbanks, Alaska. This book commemorates the work of those men and women, who endured rugged conditions in one of the coldest regions on the continent to build this road. It also celebrates the survival of the highway, the vitality of the community that lives along it, and the spirit of the people who travel its length. Photos.
