In the summer of 2020, an intrepid group of souls gathered on Zoom for an experiment: to write whatever falls through them in response to a prompt (for instance, “Please scream inside your heart”), read their work to the group, and then—get this!—sit there and take in only appreciation from their fellow writers. No criticism, no questions, no getting better at anything. Just pure celebration and welcome of these tender, newborn words. The idea is that the more this happens, the braver we get, and the more we want to write. It seems to have worked. More than two years later the group meets every week to write, listen (to themselves and to each other), and celebrate. Inside are some essays from the group’s first 18 months.
