Food, water, and air. All three items are basic necessities of life. We often give little thought to the water we drink or the air we breathe, other than to hope it is reasonably clean. On the other hand, as a society we spend vast amounts of our attention on customizing, experimenting with, and evaluating the items we eat. Our thoughts on food start from our earliest weeks. Babies show strong preferences for certain types of food. The culture we grow up in creates a baseline for us about which foods have which emotional connections. We treasure certain recipes. We find new obsessions. We delight when we come across something we adore. Food can also develop challenges for us, when society drills into us that certain foods are not as desirable as others. It becomes even worse when our weight is negatively associated with the food we are eating. Through it all, our relationship with food can come to be part of what makes us who we are. Enjoy this collection of poetry, essays, short stories, memories, recipes, photos, and drawings which explore our relationships with food.
