Karen Harner and Bjorn Tillson are a young couple that is torn apart when he volunteers for the military and is taken to fight the war in Vietnam. From those sweltering jungles to the frozen tundra of the Northwest Territories, a young couple struggles with love and loss. Karen studies the mysteries of solar astronomy while also weaving her way through single motherhood. Bjorn studies the challenges of surviving in a brutal land while dealing with the pain of second-degree burns over 30 percent of his body and an addiction to pain medication. But that pain is nothing compared to surviving the brutality of humanity. The couple is reunited by a natural disaster that nobody sees coming.
