This is Book 1 in the Celwyn series and continues where the prequel, The Violins Played before Junstan ends. It is 1865 and the immortal magician Celwyn, the automat Professor Xiau Kang, and Bartholomew, a widower from the Sudan, travel the globe with the same camaraderie of the team in Caleb Carr's Alienist series. The three protagonists set off from Prague on the magically enhanced train, the Elizabeth, to retrieve Professor Kang's wife in Singapore. Traveling with them is Celwyn's sometimes acquaintance, the dwarf Prince Leo. He has joined their party while being chased after because of the Romanov's rubies he has stolen. Several of their crew are murdered as they journey east and once they arrive in Singapore they are attacked, and eventually end up on the Nautilus with Captain Nemo. It seems that Professor Kang, is also one of the few experts in the world on the basics of building a flying machine, something very much desired by Nemo.
