With the exception of Robert Rainwater's contribution, the contributions collected in this volume are the revised lectures at the conference that took place in February 2003 on the occasion of the exhibition "ars photographica" at the Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen. The »Schriftenreihe für Künstlerpublikationen « is published by the University of Bremen, the Research Centre for Eastern Europe and the Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen. It was founded as a platform to convey the latest research on the historical contexts, concepts, and interdisciplinary and transmedia manifestations of artists' publications. Volume 1 is published in cooperation with the Institute of Cultural Studies in Art, Media and Design at the Zurich University of Art and Design. The authors of the first volume examine the relationship between book and photography in the medium of artists' publications. The discussions include avant-garde and media discourses, the conceptuality of photography, as well as narratives and narrative strategies in various artists' books. The term "medium" is understood as a hinge through which different questions about artists' books can be linked together. The contributions deal with works by Carl André, Mel Bochner, Katharina Bosse, Michel Duquette, György Galántai, Nan Goldin, Delia Keller, Martin Kippenberger, Jaroslaw Kozlowski, Zoe Leonhardt, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Katharina Meyer, Józef Robakowski, Zbigniew Rybczynski, Ed Ruscha and others. with texts by Klaus Honnef, Barbara Lange, Lech Lechowicz, Robert Rainwater, Sigrid Schade, Abigail Solomon-Godeau, Anne Thürmann-Jajes and Herta Wolf.
