This text explores current changes in modern langauges in higher education regarding shifting concepts of knowledge and culture in academia and in society at large. It presents a map of the current state of modern languages in a period largely characterized by the erosion of disciplinary boundaries across the humanities. Contributors (including Christopher Brumfit, Ronald Barnett, Michael Kelly, Susan Bassnett) analyze the relationship between traditional and emerging components of modern languages, ranging from language learning and area studies to relatively new fields such as cultural studies and cross-cultural communication.
