The Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection, (the largest and most important in Brazilian art) is on permanent display on the upper floor of the MAM, in a gallery named "Contemporary Genealogies." The collection holds works by some of the leading artists of Brazil and from aboard from the 1920's to 1970's, an extraordinary view of the modern world, seen "through the eyes" of Lasar Segall, Anita Malfatti, Claudia Andujar, Wesley Duke, Cildo Mireles and Artur Barrio, amongst others. The collection is organized in four thematic rooms: "Brasil: Visoes e vertigens" (Visions and vertigo) chronicles the perception of despair of the "non-identity" crisis in Brazilian modernism. "Cidade Partida: Conflitos e Afetos" (City Departure: conflicts and affections) focuses on the modern urban society in which friction and disagreement hold hands with friendship. "Corpos Hbridos: Identidades em Tránsito" (Hybrid bodies: Identities in transit) looks at the body as the battleground of desire and the absence of subjective. Finally, "Respiraes Geomtricas" (Geometric Respirations) explores the arrival of modernity in Brazil.
