After Maxey releases the body of a stranger called Sylvia for burial, she is determined to publish an obituary for the woman in her newspaper, THE BLATANT REGARD. As her investigations probe more deeply into Sylvia's life, Maxey is also intrigued by a man's death in a mattress store fire, just half a block from her own apartment. But when Maxey disappears on Halloween, it's up to her business partner Scotty and her lover, Fire Marshall Calen Taylor, to sort the tricks from the treats as she tangles with undisguised death.
