During the last couple of years, there has been so much anger and so many worries filling up the time that we should've spent having fun. I try telling myself that I'm just going away to school and that we will have a whole lifetime to reconnect. But then my heart murmurs distinctly and insistently, No, Cat, you've screwed up. Your dad was just being your dad, and you hurt him over and over again by ransoming your forgiveness, affection, and love. His hideous injury, I know, is beyond repair, and I also know that horses cannot live on three legs. I lay my head against his neck, and my tears silently stretch as they blend with the rain that has started to fall. They flow to the speckled ground. Freckles hangs his head even lower...our hearts crush together...
