At the sight of his son Palmer uttered a faint cry; but a quick sign from Darius, and an imperious look from the two Malays, reminded him that he must restrain his feelings. Happily, the rustling of the wind, as it blew through the long avenues of trees, smothered this exclamation, which was drawn from him by a feeling that he could not resist; certainly the orang, whose sense of hearing is extremely fine, had not heard it, for he did not turn round. However, he might look behind him at any moment, simply from his natural distrust; and, as the hunters had no means of hiding themselves, everything would be lost if he did. It was necessary to decide what to do at once; the orang and the child were going further away; and it seemed equally impossible to pursue them openly or to surprise them on this piece of bare ground. Falmer and his men threw themselves flat on the ground, behind a forsaken ant-hill, and Boa hastened to muzzle his dog, whose services were not required just then; and, while one of them kept an eye on every movement of the orang, the others set themselves to deliberate. A plan was soon agreed upon. They decided that Palmer and the negro should continue the pursuit straight on, gliding from tree to tree, and using every precaution not to be noticed by the suspicious animal; meanwhile Boa and Elephant-Slayer were to try, by going a little way round, to reach, before the orang did, a clump of cocoa-nut trees, situated at some distance, towards which he and his little captive were directing their steps; thus the orang would find himself hemmed in, and they might be able to rescue Edward.
