Maye Smith and Faye Hudson were twins, born into the hard reality of Depression-era West Virginia. They learned early on the value of a dollar, the ethic of hard work and that the most valuable thing a person has is their word. Taking jobs in the local savings and loan after high school, they worked their way up from being tellers to become assistants to the bank's president. After the president's death, the sisters managed to convince the male-dominated board of directors that they could do the job themselves -- and do it better than a man could.
