"Dialogues on Singing Technique" by Dr. Gary Funk provides important new instruction for teachers of singing. The book shares what Dr. Funk learned from his students about how to teach them effectively. After a series of introductory chapters, "Dialogues" provides insight into what occurs in voice lessons with students from beginners to professional singers, from experienced recitalists to a singer who believed she could not match pitch. Rather than presenting long discussions on topics germane to excellent singing, voice teachers will read dialogues between the voice students and Dr. Funk. These dialogues reveal the interactive nature of voice lessons by sharing the questions posed and the student responses to those questions. The "dialogues" share unique, lesson-specific, student-specific pedagogies. By reading the Socratic dialogues between voice students and their singing instructor, voice teachers will come to a more complete understanding of how to teach voice students well. Chapter headings include: "Our Cathedral of Sound," "The Stradivarius Throat," "Upgrading the Vocal Operating System," "Vowels: The Singer's Paints," "Resonance: 3-D Sound," "Breath: The Engine of the Voice," "Consonants: The Boundaries of Words," and "Compelling Singing".
