Describes glycoprotein structural abnormalities in disease as related to their biosynthesis, and reviews the current knowledge on glycan structures and functions and their biosynthesis in a wider context. Subjects include control mechanisms in the biosynthesis of N- and O- glycans, glycoproteins and cell adhesion functions, the role of the immune and blood coagulation systems, growth and hormone-related functions of glycoproteins and cell surface receptors, glycosylation in blood disorders and cystic fibrosis, and the role of glycoproteins in various types of cancer.
