"She Speaks" outlines the journey of Joya Polk in finding her voice after experiencing a multitude of struggles over the course of her life, including loss, mental illness, and the general trauma of living. This incredibly personal collection closely follows a year of Polk's life in particular, especially the darkest parts. "She Speaks" is primarily a book full of poems about depression and loss during the most difficult parts of her life, running its course all the way to when she finally became the person she is today. Polk hopes her readers will be able to find hope and inspiration in her story, knowing that unlike this book, life is not linear. Growth can happen at any time, as it is happening to her and can happen for you.
