The authors provide a comprehensive overview of China's health care system and discuss the relevance for health insurance, pharmaceuticals, and health care provision within the framework of the World Trade Organization. China's membership of the WTO presents an excellent opportunity for policy makers, economists, health practitioners, global business executives, and social critics to examine how globalization shapes economic, political, social and cultural practices, and in particular how these affect health care. The challenges to China's health care system are not unique to Chinese society. They are also relevant to those in other developing countries facing similar concerns.
