The bishops of late thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century Chichester, working in the shadow of the great saint of the diocese, Richard Wich, were men of contrasting characters and backgrounds. John of Climping's career had been a steady climb within the hierarchy at Chichester. Stephen Bersted was involved in the baronial rebellion, which brought him excommunication and suspension. Gilbert of St. Leofard served archbishops in both Canterbury and York, and as a judge was not above accepting a bribe. The extant charters of these three men offer the chance to see the details of the diocesan administration, from peasants and kings. This edition includes additions to the Chichester Fasti of 1066-1300.
