Jan Duiker (1890-1935), an independent architect associated with the modern movement in Holland, had a great personal interest in social welfare, an issue which exercised his architectural talents in writings and schemes aimed at creating a better world. This profusely illustrated and throughly documented book presents Duiker's work in its entirety, from the first houses in The Hague (1918-1922), to one of his most complex and influential buildings, the Zonnestraal sanatorium in Hilversum (1926-1928), through to his last projects, such as the Cineac cinema (1933) and the Winter department stores (1934), both in Amsterdam, and the Gooiland hotel and theatre (1934-1936) in Hilversum.
