A Saintly Scent of Amber transports the reader to 16th century Spain and the events surrounding the death of the mystic Saint Teresa of Avila, whose remains became the subject of a fierce battle among her followers, fellow nuns, and high-ranking religious officials. Through Karen Leahy's translation of Romero's 1983 play Un olor a ambar, one can appreciate the religious fervor of the time, the passionate devotion to St. Teresa, and the gender dynamics that came into play upon the passing of this famous nun.
