Although the topic of teaching business students (who are in business schools to learn how to make a profit) to also have a sense of purpose-maybe even a social conscience-might at first seem contradictory, it is precisely this concept that emerged for business schools and management education through Arjay Miller's deanship at the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) from 1969-1979. Coming to the academic world after a career at Ford Motor Company (including as president), Miller's vision of educating businessmen who were interested in values beyond themselves, in public service, and and in contributing to understanding and solving larger societal issues (such as health, education, population, and climate change) resulted in the establishment of the Public Management Program (PMP). This book focuses on the genesis and evolution of Arjay Miller's vision in the context business school and management education history, and how it was shaped also by his earlier experiences, including at Ford Motor Company.
