SONGS - featuring the early poetry of Trevor Maynard from 1982 -1985 Out of school without the qualifications to go to University, like many, I fell into a job, and like many, in my home town of Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England, that was the Civil Service. Of course, really all I wanted to do was write stories and poems. So my Civil Service career would be short-lived, but bursting with the creativity of youth, full of poems and songs, and very little of the actual work my salary was meant to be being paid to do, My first book covering this period, PATHWAYS, covers the poetry pamphlets and booklets I produced and sold to my friends and colleagues. This second volume, showcases the SONGS I wrote and occasionally co-wrote, some of which found their way onto cassette tapes, although those recordings, as far as I know, are long since lost. I say song-writing, because well, this was poetry with choruses, and refrains, and because well, Nik used to strum along the guitar and sing. Maybe there was a cornel of a dream in there, but one thing was sure, along with publishing twelve booklets of more conventional poetry during this period, I wrote over a hundred songs, seventy-eight of which are reproduced here. Around thirty or so were put to the music, and recorded, but sadly, I have lost the recordings, and lost contact with Nik as well, so if they exist, if Nik still exists, great. A couple were sang by Pennie Gugdin, but everything came to a screeching halt when I could literally no longer stand the constant monotony of work and ditched the career for life in favour of returning to higher education and studying English Literature – the path denied to me as school – and eventually drama. Did any of the songs ever make it to charts? Maybe, but then I woke up. However, like every other word I have ever written, they survived in a box somewhere, until now, they are revealed in the light of day. I enjoyed revisiting and digitizing them, return
