The study begins with a presentation of the work of Kureishi, a novelist 'having emerged from 2 old histories,' and born of an odd mixture of continents and blood.' It then aims at widening the scope of the reading possibilities offered by the Buddha of Suburbia: novels by Rushdie, Julian Barnes as well as classics. Classical topics are discussed as well as more offbeat ones. Despite the seriousness of the issues discussed, the 'light touch' has been favoured, out of respect for the manner, casual albeit earnest, in which Kureishi goes about designing new and funny ways of becoming English in multi-racial England.
