But who could render back to the sufferers their murdered relatives? Who could restore the husband to the wife? the father to the child? What could again give them confidence in their Sovereign's promise of protection? or make them even feel secure in the land of the Gentiles? To them was the word of inspiration literally fulfilled, when, foretelling their dispersion into different countries, it declared, "And among these nations thou shalt find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest; but the Lord shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind, and thy life shall hang in doubt before thee, and thou shalt fear day and night. Thou shalt have none assurance of thy life." Having related thus cursorily the events that took place in the Jewish quarter, we must return to Marah, who, with feelings better imagined than described, remained trembling and concealed during that sorrowful night. Once or twice she ventured to look forth from her hiding-place, and saw, with terrible distinctness, flames rising to the sky, which told but too plainly that the work of desolation was going on. Marah had often anticipated trial, and when hearing of the sufferings endured by her people in former times, had reflected that such might be her allotted portion in some future day; but 'there is a vast difference between anticipation and reality. Her life had been passed in comparative security, and now the blow had fallen, it seemed as if one moment had done the work of years, and taught her at once the bitter truth that "man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward," and sorrow the portion of his mortal destiny....
