Few attempts have been made to establish empirically whether mineinfrastructure does or can contribute to more broadly-based economic development in geographically-remote regions. This study presents somerelevant empirical evidene from North Austrilia, using case studies ofprojects and resource regions in Western Australia (WA) and the NorthernTerritory (NT). The appoach is twofold - information is provided on theinfrastructure constructed in association with particular projects and onthe extent to which this is used for non-mining activity, and the employmentstructure of resource regions is examined to determine whether significanteconomic diversification has occurred in the wake of mineral development.
