When single parent, Army Reserve nurse, Sgt. Sara Raye was deployed to serve in what became the Persian Gulf War Operation Desert Storm, she never dreamed that her toughest battle was looming back at home. After spending several months in Saudi Arabia, she returned home injured to find that her ex-husband had stolen custody of the three children she’d had full custody of for five years. Citing a violation of the Soldiers & Sailor’s Civil Relief Act, Sgt. Raye began a battle that would take her through 17-civilian lawyers before the US Military would step forward to right the wrong. In two unprecedented moves, a National Guard lieutenant colonel JAG officer (lawyer) would be ordered to represent Army Reserve Sgt. Sara Raye, in Domestic Court. This important case influenced changes in the rules governing single parents who serve in the military.
