The proposed policy foundation is a public discussion document that will lead to the development of a clear public statement of policy to guide the long-term management of Alberta's recreation and protected areas system, and will provide the foundation for the development of the new Natural Heritage Act. The new Act is to consolidate into one act the management of recreation and protected areas, currently managed under three separate pieces of legislation. The document describes the new classification system to be introduced for the new Act and gives examples of each: provincial nature reserve, wildland provincial park, natural environment provincial park, heritage rangeland, and recreation area. A table is provided for comparing current management guidelines for recreation and protected areas with guidelines proposed for the new Act. Another table lists activities that will be permitted in the various classes of recreation and protected areas.
