Product Description In 1779, the German scholar Heinrich August Ottokar Reichard translated the French book Histoire naturelle, civile et politique du Tonquin of Jerome Richard, which had been printed the year before in Paris. The Abbe Richards book was itself a published version of the records of the missionary Charles-Thomas de Saint-Phalle, who stayed in Vietnam from about 1730 to 1738. While both the Abbes Saint-Phalle and Richard dedicated a large part of their French accounts to missionary work, the German translator Reichard concentrated his 230 page book, Sittliche und naturliche Geschichte von Tunkin on all the information about the country concerning people, customs and rites, history, trade and handicrafts. In this new edition the authors follow the origin of this informative record about Tunkin in the 18th century and introduce the three European authors - Saint-Phalle, Richard and Reichard. They have provided an impression of the value of this text among other historical records of the 17-19th centuries about Vietnam, by quoting textual passages as examples and by comparison with other records.
