Bullying and name calling are common immigrant and refugee experiences. The purpose of Tangle of Thorns and other books in this series is to help children develop the skills of insight, intentionality, and imagery. Mahad's uncle used an African proverb to help Mahad understand what was leading him into trouble and how he could avoid it. Proverbs make abstract and complex principles concrete and accessible, while also sharing knowledge learned from common human experiences. Proverbs impart awareness and understanding to children in a concise and often visual way. The African proverb series helps children make choices, take action, and overcome challenges.
