Author Description

Nellie Nakamura, a 2nd generation Japanese American, remembers her mother Rui's travels from Meiji-era Japan to America; her childhood in California's Santa Clara Valley; and raising her own family during the roaring 20s, Great Depression and their incarceration at Heart Mountain Internment Center during WWII. She resettled her familiy in Minneapolis and San Jose, rebuilding her familiy "stronger than ever." Her memories of daily life are interwoven with the bigger picture of world and US history. Includes 200 photos and a family tree. While started as a family history, the book is an engaging look at the Asian American experience.
