The international context and parallels of Fényes' early works are presented in the exhibition by a few Austrian and German paintings, and the exhibition also includes works by Hungarian artist friends and students from the four decades of the Szolnok art colony that bear Fényes' name. Selected from the collection of the Museum of Ethnography, the exhibition also brings together a selection of ethnographic and everyday objects from the Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county, which were the main motifs of many of the artist's paintings. Although his paintings have always been essential works in the Hungarian National Gallery's permanent 20th-century exhibitions, his name has been absent from the monographic list of exhibitions, Lights and Shadows attempts to redefi ne his place in 20th century art history.
