The exposure to the air is requisite, to change the nature of a portion of the constituents (which at first do good by their acrid nature) to sulphate of lime or gypsum, a manure serviceable on many soils, and especially to such crops as clover, sainfoin, lucerne, peas, beans, vetches, and turnips. An eye should also be given to the condition of compost-heaps of rotten turf, or trimmings from ditch-sides, or of neglected manureheaps which have been allowed to become weed-grown, as Daddy Longlegs grubs are often to be found in numbers in such localities, and carried thence on the land. Dressings of lime on the rotting turf, or trimmings, and sprinklings with gas-lime on either compost, or manure heaps, are some of the measures to prevent egg-laying.
