Volume I of Karamzin's monumental work takes the reader from prehistory to the 11th century, and features iconic events such as the 'Calling of the Varangians' and the Christianization of Rus', as well as famous characters such as Prince Vladimir of Kyiv. This volume also includes Karamzin's Foreword, which presents his thoughts on the nature and value of history, plus a detailed preface describing the context of the History and various issues arising from the translation.
