In this steel the manganese ranges from 0.50 to 0.70 per cent, and the sulphur and phosphorus must both be under 0.04 per cent. Forgings of this steel are heat treated to relieve forging stressses, the heat treatment being as follows: 1. After forging the steel is heated to 1650 deg F. and cooled slowly. 2. The steel is next heated to 1475 to 1525 deg. F., the temperature varying inversely with the carbon in the steel. It is maintained at this temperature for one hour and quenched in water. 3. The steel is heated to 950 deg. F. and maintained at this point for a period, depending upon the size of the piece, but usually one hour, after which it is cooled gradually. Steel No. 6 is made from basic open hearth material with a carbon content of 0.35 to 0.45 per cent. It is used for crank forgings, time gear shafts, levers, and other parts requiring considerable strength. The tensile strength is about 100,000 lb., and the elastic limit 85,000 lb. per sq. in. The manganese ranges from 0.50 to 0.70 per cent and the sulphur and phosphorus are both under 0.04 per cent. This steel is not intended for case hardening. Its heat treatment is: 1. Heat to 1650 deg. F., and cool slowly. 2. Heat to 1450 to 1500 deg. F., hold at an even temperature for one hour and quench in water. 3. Heat to 950 deg. F. for one hour and cool slowly. A chrome-nickel alloy steel known as No. 11 is employed foi portions subjected to stresses and shocks. This may be forged or case hardened according to the amount of carbon it contains. The tensile strength is approximately 125,000 lb., and the clastic limit 100,000 lb. per sq. in., with a reduction in area of about 50 per cent. The composition of the steel is: Carbon 0.15 to 0.25 per cent, mang...
