On the Pacific Coast, practice in fuel oil burning has been largely standardised, but in the east the principal reliance for fuel is still placed on coal.. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has recently gathered together in its transactions and proceedings the latest and best information on this subject, and in the August issue of its Journal prints in full the reports of a series of meetings in various sections of the country at which the subject of fuel oil was discussed. The papers and the discussions thereon are reproduced in abridged form below. COMPARATIVE EVAPORATIVE VALUES OF COAL AND OIL By C. F. Wieland In comparing the evaporative values of the two fuels, coal and oil, it is only fair to select a coal that is considered standard and, that is largely used in evaporative tests. It would not be just to select a coal of-the inferior value of our Western coals, and Pocahontas coal and Kern crude oil are therefore selected as a basis of comparison, having analyses as follows: TABLE I.--COAL AND OIL ANALYSES.
