A most inconspicuous part of a manufacturing plant to-day is the boiler and engine house, and yet it protects machinery, whose value is 10 to 20 per cent of the entire cost of the plant. This department--the Power plant--is the foundation of the entire business of a going concern, the quality of its product influences the entire factory, the character of the help and even the community in which it is found. Yet often the power plant is housed in a building covered with wooden planks, with battens over the joints, and a tar roof laid on the wood, or the four walls of the containing building are of common red brick laid up in lime mortar. In this building are found the steam boilers, the steam or other engines, the electric generators, the main switchboard condenser, boiler feed pump, and in some plants the fire pump, feed water heaters...
