The purpose of this book is to provide a guide to a new research area. Until recently, distributed control theorists treated the communication as a given while mobile networking theorists treated the mobility as a given. Similarly the necessary control is often assumed to achieve a given mobility. What is missing is a unified approach that considers the joint problem of communication, mobility, and control. The book is targeted at researchers in each of these areas to -provide a tutorial in each area since any single researcher will have gaps; -develop a unifying framework for advancing the research problem; and -identifying key areas for future research. These challenges—dynamic assignment of resources between tasks and communication; cooperative communication via relays and ferries; combined communication and control—come up in a variety of cooperative vehicle control systems ranging from public safety, scientific, and military aircraft applications; intelligent highway systems; and robotics.
