The Avalon Penninsula of Newfoundland became known to Europe shortly after John Cabot’’s voyage of 1497. In the years that followed, merchant adventures began sailing to its shores in search of new sources of wealth. They found riches beyond what they could image. Settlements at Ferryland and St. John’s are among the oldest in North America with the harbour at St. John’s one of the closest havens for vessels sailing out to the New World. To the modern explorer the historic peninsula offers the same world of wonders that awaited the first Europeans. Today, the Avalon is again waiting to be discovered by the discerning eye. Here in the images that follow, you will discover the penninsula through the eyes of Ben Hanson, who has been recording the Avalon for more than three decades.
