In an eight block, two square mile section of a large city is a slum called the Village. It is home to depression, drugs and failure; a repository of those who cannot function civilly and others who cannot escape its grip of poverty. The area is patrolled by understaffed police officers whose job is to try and keep the lid on the boiling pot of crime, cruelty, and violence. During a nightly patrol, one of those officers encounters a drug addict who offers to sell his soul for heroin. The officer agrees to the offer and writes a contract on a three by five card. Over time, the officer continues to obtain, by barter and trade, the souls from those whom he was entrusted to protect. When the officer is promoted to the police department's detective division he brings to his new assignment thirty-one contracts of those who have surrendered their soul. But shortly thereafter, he learns that some of those who sold their soul are being murdered. In a race against time, the detective must uncover who is responsible for committing those murders. This is his story of regret and revenge.
