The Earth has begun to swallow civilization with rapidly re-emerging ecosystems: massive new forests overtaking entire cities, bodies of water recycling the wastes from their systems, and wildlife returning in droves to land once conquered by humanity in a mysterious and sudden apocalyptic event. While this unfolds, four strangers are brought together by one shared complication: Illness. Sloane is epileptic, Tony is HIV-positive, Miranda is diabetic, and Luke is severely addicted to opiates. Through a series of encounters with other survivors, pagan and evangelical cults, a hedonistic End of the World party, and a community of accelerationists taking shelter and burning books in the crumbled remains of a once great library, Sloane and the others set forth across the new Pacific Northwest landscape, finding every way possible to continue taking their life-prolonging medications. When the group discovers clues and rumors of an enigmatic disgraced pharmaceutical chemist known only as The Cook, they make their way towards his hidden cabin on Mount Hood, in search of a permanent solution to survive in a world that’s doing everything it can to erase them from existence. Children of Apothetae is a harrowing exploration of misanthropy, nihilism, disability, mankind's relationship to the Earth, and the innate necessity of hope—in whatever form it can be found.
