"This publication commemorates thirty years of researching and collecting works by Japanese American photographers. This effort began with the exhibition 'Japanese American Photography in Los Angeles, 1920-1945', held at Los Angeles Valley College, April 23 through June 3, 1982. The exhibition was the first comprehensive presentation of works by these photographers since before World War II. An expanded exhibition, entitled 'Japanese Photography in America, 1920-1940', was organized for the George J. Doizaki Gallery, Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, Los Angeles, California, April 19 through June 1, 1986... A number of the prints included in this publication appeared in one or both of these exhibitions. All of the prints in the volume are from my personal collection"--Page 4.
