Joint training between social work and nursing is gaining momentum and needs to be placed within the broader social policy context which is having increasing impact upon the way that all professional carers are trained. The book charts the development of joint training from 1969. Various policy trends are outlined and it forwards the argument that the experience within mental handicap could provide a model for future cooperation in other areas of activity within the nursing/social work sphere. It focuses upon the use of open learning in multi-disciplinary in-service training and has found that this could be an appropriate means of training in community care. Implications and limitations are assessed.
