Since the first Congress on Free Radicals in Liver Injury took place in 1985, much research and development has taken place in this area of liver pathophysiology which is now considered to be of prime interest and importance in hepatology. In these Proceedings of the second Congress, held in Turin in June 1988, the most recent advances in the study of free radical mechanisms, from the organic to the molecular level in both acute and chronic liver injuries are discussed, in both experimental animals and man. The first section covers the remarkable advances that have been made in the clarification of biochemical mechanisms connecting oxidative insult to hepatocyte death.
