In the four and a half decades that he spent earning his living by going to sea, G. Burton saw a lot of change as the free-and-easy life of his early days gave way to the inexorable rise of containerization and finally to the near-total extinction of the American Merchant Marine. In this collection of novellas and stories, he has attempted to convey a little of what he saw and heard during those years, a little of what he felt. From the careless joys of a young man out to see the world to the ever darker vision of an aging man stuck in a declining industry, a vanishing way of life. Nearly gone by now but never to be forgotten.
