A ragpicker's aesthetic pervades this book with its accumulation of overheard remarks and anecdotes based on various incidents and on-the-road encounters. Pilgrims of various stripes travel along a helter-skelter of paths connecting city and hinterland. Lucas sows ironic asides throughout CLIFFHANGER NOTES. He is a type of court jester "letting the train of thought go right by his stop again." His fool's commentary pokes holes in the visions which ensue when Reason falls asleep at the switch.
