From Library Journal Thackeray (1811-63) is alive and well in these letters, presented as a massive two-volume supplement to the 1945-46 edition of his correspondence edited by the late Gordon N. Ray. The letters are addressed to such renowned figures as Longfellow, the Thomas Carlyles, Robert Browning, and Charles Dickens, as well as to Thackeray's publishers and colleagues from Punch. His own delightful sketches are interspersed throughout the text. Editor Harden has compiled a meticulous and comprehensive supplement containing previously unpublished as well as some revised material from Ray's edition. The letters are numbered according to Ray's system, making this an easy book to use. While a superb complement to the original edition, these volumes are worth purchasing on their own. They are an essential component of Thackeray scholarship. Highly recommended for literature collections.Diane Gardner Premo, SILS, Univ. of Buffalo, N.Y.Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.
