Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin (1766-1826) was one of the founding fathers of Russian literature. He travelled extensively in Western Europe, read English, French and German fluently, and was an ardent follower of the European Sentimentalist movement in literature. With his Sentimental Tales, he helped to introduce a more accessible style of literature to an increasingly literate readership in Russia, paving the way for great writers such as Mikhail Lermontov, Alexander Pushkin, and those who followed them. This book contains new English translations of four of Karamzin’s tales, as well as stories and poetry by those who inspired him and those who were later influenced by his work.
